Task (20 mins)

The operating system is the software which
  • controls the hardware
  • provides the user interface
  • deals with errors
  • interfaces between application packages and the hardware
  • handles storage of data by keeping track of files/folders
  • maximises the uses of memory
  • organises resources (processing time/memory use)
  • handles saving of data by keeping track of files/folders

All computer devices have an operating system - your games console will have an operating system written specifically for it (XBox operating system is based on Windows)

Task (10 mins)

Utility programs do the following tasks
  • file maintenance
  • file compressions
  • installing & uninstalling software
  • compacting files on the hard drive
  • virus checking & removal
  • burning cd's/dvd/s

Add a screenshot of a utility program on the computer you are using to todays work.

Task (10 minutes)

Explain what a driver is and give examples of drivers you would find on most computers.
